Tate Modern has published figures revealing that it has attracted 10m visitors since it opened in May 2000 and that visitor numbers continue to exceed expectations, with over 3.5m visitors last year against a target figure of 3m.
The continued success of Tate Modern has meant that the Tate family of galleries receives more visitors than any other UK attraction with the exception of Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Research has found that 50% of visitors to Tate Modern are returning for the second time, and that 46% of visitors are doing so within a year of their first visit. Since Tate Modern opened there has also been an increase of over 100% in Tate Membership from 26,000 to 56,000. Almost a quarter of a million school children have visited the gallery in organised groups since May 2000, and over 25,000 visitors have now taken part in family workshops. 335,000 visitors have used Tate Audios, and trials are currently underway to develop the UK’s first Multimedia Tour as part of the organisation?s commitment to providing education tools for visitors.
