What are the professional challenges facing migrant theatre makers in the UK? Verity Healey interviews Romanian-born director Alexandru Istudor.

There are few better-placed theatre directors in the UK who can talk about the first-generation migrant experience in British theatre than Romanian-born Alex Istudor. After studying in Romania he completed a master’s degree in theatre directing at London’s Royal Holloway University and returned to his home country to direct Panopticon (based on the the U.S. Senate Report on a CIA Detention Interrogation Program that details the use of torture during CIA detention and interrogation) for the sociopolitical company Reactor of Creation and Experiment. In 2016, he won the National Contest for Young Theatre Directors (the most important directing award for emerging artists in Romania) and directed The Other Country based on the writings of Romanian-born German writer Herta Müller at Craiova National Theatre.
