When it comes to the City of Culture competition, we must not let stats like the £1bn boost to Hull’s economy drown out concerns about who this money benefits, warns Mark Ball.

Competition is cruel, and Stoke didn’t win the title of UK City of Culture. In the hours following the announcement that Coventry won the coveted title for 2021, Twitter filled with messages of honest disappointment and respectful congratulations from Stoke supporters to the winners.
