New York arts organisations are finding new ways of cultivating international donors and supporters, finds Pia Catton.

At the New York Philharmonic’s fall gala, Gabriela and Antonio Quintella blended into the swirl of the city’s arts patrons.

Ms. Quintella, wearing Carolina Herrera, mingled with guests, while her husband discussed his love of music.

For an increasing number of New York arts institutions, the São Paulo couple represents the next generation of patrons: wealthy, cultured and living overseas.

The orchestra and other groups are swiping a proven tactic from their international counterparts.

For decades, arts organizations outside the U.S. have raised money by registering their nonprofits here, such as the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra or the Royal Shakespeare Company’s RSC America.
