The new Artistic Director of The Old Vic, Matthew Warchus, shares his vision for the theatre with Anita Singh.

The Old Vic is to shake off its image as a “posh theatre” and appeal to the masses with a broad new programme that includes a musical version of Groundhog Day and a return to the venue’s vaudeville roots.

Matthew Warchus, the new artistic director, promised a “brand refresh” as he unveiled his inaugural year-long season. He takes over from Kevin Spacey, who is handing over the reins after 11 years in charge.

The hottest ticket is likely to be the world premiere of Groundhog Day, which Warchus will direct next year before it moves to Broadway.
