Sage Gateshead renamed The Glasshouse
Decision to change name of venue taken after announcement last year that an arena and conference centre to be built next door would be called The Sage.
Sage Gateshead will now be known as The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, it has been announced.
Unveiling the new name today (Wednesday 13 September), the cultural centre said the moment marks a new era in its 20-year history. The venue, designed by architects Foster + Partners, had taken its name from local software company The Sage Group, one of its patrons, when it opened on the banks of the Tyne in 2004.
But a decision was taken to adopt a new name to make it distinct from the adjacent new Sage Arena and Conference Centre being built on Gateshead quayside. The new identity was created alongside Manchester-based design team Music, which began the process with conversations with people from across the North East.
Abigail Pogson, Managing Director of The Glasshouse said: “Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences of live music with us to help shape this new identity.
“We’re looking forward to continuing to see people across the North East enjoy and make great music, working both with musicians from across the globe and from our most musical region.”
The charity said the new identity "reflects the vibrancy and energy of the music making that happens within its walls" and in its activity throughout the region.
To celebrate the new name, The Glasshouse is opening its doors this weekend for two days of live music, building tours and music-making opportunities. Everyone is welcome and everything is free. This Open House weekend will celebrate the charity’s new name and a new year of great live music for all.
