Baker to chair Scottish Chamber Orchestra

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) has announced JOANNA BAKER CBE as Chair of the Board, succeeding COLIN BUCHAN who steps down following nine years in post.

Baker carries over thirty years’ experience in arts management, organisational leadership, cultural policy and international working. She is currently an independent consultant and non-executive director working across Scottish, UK and international cultural sectors. 

A former Managing Director of Edinburgh International Festival for twelve years, Baker was more recently Executive Director of IMPACT Scotland, a charity established to develop and run Dunard Centre, a concert hall being built in Edinburgh.

Her prior experience in governance includes work with the National Youth Choir of Scotland and Scottish Arts Council. Baker is currently Chair of National Partnership for Culture, an advisory group to Scottish Ministers, and a Trustee of Edinburgh International Culture Summit Foundation. She is also the Co-founder and Director of Primadonna Festival, a festival dedicated to celebrating writing and work by women and marginalised voices. 

Outgoing Chair Buchan said Baker has been an “outstanding member” of the SCO board since she joined three years ago.

“Her exceptional knowledge of the cultural world plus a deep commitment to all aspects of the work of the SCO across Scotland and internationally, means she will be an equally outstanding Chair,” Buchan added.
 
Baker commented: “I have been an admirer – and fan – of the SCO for many years, and my admiration for this wonderful orchestra has only deepened since joining the board.”
