GREGORY DORAN, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, will be taking compassionate leave.

His husband, SIR ANTONY SHER, has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Doran expects to return to the role early in 2022. Deputy Artistic Director ERICA WHYMAN will step in during his absence with the support of Executive Director CATHERINE MALLYON.

RSC Chair NIGEL HUGILL said the company remains in "very safe hands".
