Hall steps down at the National Gallery
The National Gallery has announced that LORD TONY HALL OF BIRKENHEAD, a Trustee of since November 2019 and Chair since July, has resigned with immediate effect.
The announcement follows the publication of an independent report revealing failings in the processes and procedures used to obtain a 1995 BBC interview with Diana, Princess of Wales, and a lack of transparency and inadequate effort to investigate what happened during his tenure as BBC Director General.
In his parting statement, Lord Hall said: “I have always had a strong sense of public service and it is clear my continuing in the role would be a distraction to an institution I care deeply about. As I said two days ago, I am very sorry for the events of 25 years ago and I believe leadership means taking responsibility.”
Deputy Chair SIR JOHN KINGMAN will take on the responsibilities of Chair for an interim period.
