Independent Society of Musicians confirms next two presidents
PAULINE BLACK is the new President of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) while NICKY SPENCE has been named President-Elect.
Black took over as President on Friday (21 April), with Spence set to step into the role in April 2024.
Currently a Senior Lecturer and Head of Music Engagement at the University of Aberdeen, Black has taught in various educational contexts including schools, higher education, and community settings.
She is also a music education consultant, and has devised and delivered several creative projects for arts organisations including Creative Learning Aberdeen, Jazz Scotland, and Sound Scotland.
She replaces outgoing president VICK BAIN.
ISM says under Bain’s presidency it had its most successful year ever, including the release of reports Dignity at work 2, which Bain co-authored, and The case for change.
Bain commented: “It has been a great privilege to serve as the ISM’s President for the past year as we changed our name and rebranded, remained at the forefront of the battle against discrimination and harassment in the music sector, and supported musicians with advice and services”.
“Pauline will be a wonderful President and I look forward to working with her in the next year and beyond.”
President-Elect Spence is a world-renowned opera singer. He says he hopes to be “an energetic representative for musicians in an ever-changing landscape” in the role.
“In doing so, I aim to help protect the conditions which musicians deserve to give their best work and continue to inspire the next generation of musicians and educators who need specific support to find a sustainable route to the profession.”
