ALAN SMITH will be Liverpool City Council's first heritage leader.

The new role is an amalgamation of other roles that will see Smith manage and promote the city's buildings, parks and historic assets.

Smith's primary focus will be on the stewardship of the Town Hall, Croxeth Hall and St George’s Hall, where he is currently Manager.

Smith will also become the city's official historian and lead a team to devise a new arts strategy for the city's collections.

Earlier this year, Liverpool was stripped of its World Heritage city status, held since 2004.
