Film policy to be reviewed
Ivan Lewis MP, Shadow Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport has accused the Government of “back to front policy making” after Jeremy Hunt announced a review of film funding. Having axed the UK Film Council in July 2010, the Government has now launched a review of policy to “identify barriers to growth and build a more successful British film industry”. Lewis said, “Film is a classic example of how this Conservative-led Government operates. Cut first, with no consultation or due process, and then launch a review as an afterthought.” Former Culture Secretary Chris Smith will Chair a panel of eight experts to consider development and production; distribution and exhibition; and inward investment. It is expected to report its findings later this year. The review aims to identify the best ways to support successful business models that will allow the UK film industry to contribute to economic growth, nurture talent and engage with UK audiences.
Lewis also pointed out that Hunt has not yet revealed how much the abolition of the UKFC and transfer of responsibilities has saved or cost the taxpayer, and that despite Ed Vaizey’s announcement that Creative England will replace the nine regional screen agencies a long term business plan has not yet been published.
